Why keep a Torted Tri?
Torted Tri’s are a common occurrence and I have read on multiple Blogs, Websites and Facebook groups that you should never breed the Tort or Non-extension gene (“e”)into your Tri’s and I can see the justification for someone making that choice…However, for those of us that live in reality and are working to improve this variety a Torted Tri is not the end of the world and it can actually help as much if not more than it hurts! The key to using a Torted
Tri is to use ONLY quality animals that are better in type and/or fur than your correct Tri’s. If a Torted Tri is the pick of the litter you would be crazy to cull it! Color is the easiest thing to correct… Type and Fur are not!
This is a clear example of why Torted Tri's should not be over-looked in a breeding program... This Torted Buck bred to an Agouti-Based "ejej" Tri produces some absolutely beautiful and SHOWABLE Tri's!
So, how do you fix a Torted Tri?
Breed them to Agouti based Tri’s/Tri-Carriers OR to Double “ej” Tri’s for the best success…
*** Each kit that receives an “ej” (Tri-gene) from both parents will be a Non-Torted “ejej” Tri.
*** Each kit that receives an “ej” from one parent and the “e” from the Torted parent AND the Agouti parents “A” (Agouti-Gene) will be a Non-Torted Tri but will still carry the “e” (Non-Extension Gene).
